Somatics

Tuesday 8.15pm

Learning to feel sensations and the quality of movements in your body and being able to move consciously. Learn to feel what parts of your body are chronically contracted and how to gently release them. Through simple specific movements called pandiculations you gain strength and grace and decrease or eliminate pain and reduce your reaction to stress.
Methods of sensory-motor education that improve physical function by increasing sensation and motor control and changing habitual patterns.

Sensory Motor Amnesia

This is where you have lost conscious control over certain muscle groups.  This can be due to repetitive movements, surgery, injury or emotional trauma.  With sensory motor amnesia our muscles are on autopilot.  We’ve lost control of them instead of contracting when we work and relaxing after they can stay on or partially on.  Somatics helps to turn the lights back on in the dark corners of yourself.

enquiry based learning

This empowers the student to learn to sense and trust themselves.  They don’t need a teacher telling them what to feel or how many repetitions to do.  They become their own experts.  They can self sense, self adjust and self heal.

movements that focus on feel rather than form

The feel connects with the nervous system and the neocortex of the brain.  Feeling the movement brings awareness to how it is in the first place.  Only by feeling and sensing can you truly change your body as you are connecting the brain to the body.  If you force yourself into a shape without having a pleasant discussion with your nervous system your body will keep falling into its usual pattern of tension and dysfunction

Somatics for all

Somatics is for the top athlete to move more efficiently.  It is for the person in chronic pain to improve mobility and reduce pain.  It is for the anxious or stressed person, sometimes it's easier to process feelings through the body rather than mentally figuring them out.  Personally somatics has changed my life physcially and emotionally.
